After nearly a 10-year absence, Stockton Arena will once again be the host of an Arena Soccer game on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 6:00pm featuring the National Arena Soccer Teams of USA and Mexico.
The California Cougars (also known as the Stockton Cougars) played at the Stockton Arena from 2005-2009 and won the PASL-Pro Championship in April of 2009. The team moved to Livermore, California soon after and dissolved in 2011. Current Team USA General Manager Bernie Lilavois was part of the Cougars as a player and then Head Coach in the 4 years (2005-2009) the team played at Stockton Arena.
“The time I spent in Stockton with the Cougars was some of the best memories I have playing and coaching in this sport of arena soccer. The fan support was always great and Stockton Arena is a great venue to watch any event and I am looking forward to bringing back arena soccer with this exciting matchup between USA and Mexico” said Bernie Lilavois. “Soccer fans in the region will have this opportunity to watch not only great arena soccer action but two top national teams who have built up a rivalry over the last several years. This game will be a must see event!”
Rosters for the game will be announced in the coming weeks. The Mexico team recently competed in the 2017 WMF World Cup this past October in Tunisia and knocked USA out of the tournament in the Quarterfinal round. Both USA and Mexico will be on a short California Tour in preparations for the 2018 Pan American Minifootball Championships in Guatemala June 7-13, 2018.
